About
Youth Activities offers sports teams and leagues, sports skills camps, rocketry, dance, chess, music lessons, swimming, hiking, exploring, arts and crafts, and science activities. Specific sports include soccer, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, baseball, football, and mountain biking, along with Learn-to-Swim programs, Water Polo, Swim Team, and Water Aerobics. The program also includes Summer Kidz Camp, which features swimming, hiking, exploring, sports, arts and crafts, and science activities, and a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) option where participants assist counselors with games, snack time, field trips, and more.
• Ages: 3–15 years old
• Schedule: Summer Kidz Camp runs for 8 weeks from June 22 to August 14, 2026, with full-day sessions from 9:00am to 3:00pm and optional Extended Day Care from 3:00pm to 5:00pm; seasonal activities have separate registration dates in spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Youth Activities includes specific options such as a 3–5 years old soccer program, K–2nd grade soccer league, K–2nd grade basketball program, 3rd–6th grade youth basketball league, 6th–8th grade middle school pre-season basketball league, K–2nd grade indoor soccer league, 3rd–8th grade indoor soccer league, youth baseball hitting clinic, 1st–5th grade track and field, a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for 2nd–8th grade, a Chess League for K–6th grade, Rocketry for 3rd–8th grade, Dance and Beginner Dance for ages 4–7, and middle school ski and snowboarding. Financial assistance is available for all youth activities, and volunteers are needed for most programs. Summer Kidz Camp runs in the summer only, and Summer Activities, Fall Activities, Winter Activities, and Spring Activities each have specific registration opening dates.
The Youth Activities Department’s stated objective is to enhance access to sports, performing arts, summer camps, swimming, and community programs. Hood River Valley Parks & Recreation District has been serving the Hood River community since 1988 and serves more than 20,000 people in the Hood River area. The mission of the Hood River Valley Parks & Recreation District is to provide recreational opportunities to the citizens of the Park District, with a focus on the youth of the community, and to develop and maintain facilities and programs that provide safe and economical recreational environments for all users. Hood River Valley Parks + Recreation District has the only indoor public pool in the Columbia River Gorge.
Hood River Valley Parks & Recreation District works with local schools so students have the chance to learn how to swim. The District is exploring options for replacing or updating the aging Hood River Aquatic Center and is seeking community voices via a survey. Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District received a grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to purchase 4.1 acres of Parkdale Park, with land donated at a reduced price by owner Michael Mills.
The leadership team for these programs includes Director Mark Hickok, Assistant Director Marcie Wily, Admin Assistant Kelsey Barnes, Aquatic Center Supervisor Ally Kriskewic, Assistant Supervisor (Aquatics) Kenna Harris, Recreation Supervisor Jaime Rivera, Recreation Assistant / Assistant Supervisor (Sports + Recreation) Gio Mangaña-Rivera, Program Coordinator Kennedy Breithaupt, and Maintenance Supervisor Anthony Johnston. The District is overseen by a five-member Board of Directors elected by citizens of the District.
