About
Philomath Youth Activities Club Athletics offers youth sports including Flag Football, Volleyball, Cheer, Basketball, T-Ball, Mites (coach pitch), Baseball, and Softball. Most athletics have online game schedules that are regularly updated on the Valley League Sports website. PYAC has joined the Valley League in the NFL Flag Football program, and baseball teams play in the Valley District JBO, which has a list of banned bats for the upcoming season.
• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: Flag Football runs September–October with registration in June/July; Volleyball runs September–October with registration in June/July; Basketball runs December–early March with registration in late October and November; T-Ball and Mites run mid-May–mid-July with registration in February; Baseball and Softball run April–mid-July with registration in February; office hours are 8:30 AM–6:00 PM Monday–Friday
Flag Football games are held mainly in Philomath and Corvallis, with possible travel across the valley. Volleyball teams can expect limited travel across the valley, and grades 4–6 play in the Valley League while 7/8th graders play in the school league, where they are held to academic standards and do not need physicals through PYAC. Basketball grades 1–4 play in Philomath and surrounding areas, and 5/6th graders play in the Valley League with limited travel across the valley. T-Ball and Mites games are played in Philomath and Corvallis, Baseball teams can expect limited travel across the valley through the Valley District JBO, and Softball teams play in the Valley League with limited travel across the valley. Because of the way JBO is structured, baseball teams are composed based on age and skill level, and some 3/4th grade teams may play in the Developmental League.
PYAC’s athletic program is dedicated to providing athletic opportunities for the youth of the area that will build confidence and self-esteem, and PYAC states that every youth should be able to participate regardless of race, religion, creed, sex, ability, or financial status. PYAC states that while winning is a part of organized athletics, it is not the focus of PYAC’s programs and is not used as a measure of success. PYAC does not offer tackle football, cross country, track and field, soccer, or wrestling, and instead lists local organizations that provide these sports: tackle football through MidValley Pop Warner, cross country and track and field through Philomath Harriers, soccer through Corvallis AYSO, and wrestling through Philomath Mat Club.
PYAC partners with the Philomath High School Cheer Program to offer cheer to all Philomath youth in kindergarten through eighth grades, with the program run by Philomath High School Cheer head coach Kathy Kohler. Philomath High School coaching staffs generally put on camps and clinics for each individual sport, and PYAC is not involved in organizing these events. As of spring 2024, PYAC has completed building two new baseball fields at the Philomath Frolic & Rodeo Grounds as a community effort, and Pioneer Connect is among the sponsors with whom PYAC is proud to partner. PYAC thanks various fall, winter, and spring sports team sponsors for the years 2025 and 2026.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Eddie Van Vlack, Associate Director/Childcare Director Sarah Woosley, and Athletic Director/Administrative Coordinator Adrienne Hecker. Eddie Van Vlack has been with PYAC since 1996 and is a 1998 graduate of Western Oregon University. Sarah Woosley began working with PYAC in 2001 and is a 1999 graduate of Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences. Adrienne Hecker joined PYAC as the Sports Coordinator in 2013, became Administrative Coordinator in 2018, and received a B.A. in English from Oregon State University in 2019.
PYAC references a “Promise Builder Award Winners” section and directs coaches to a Coaches’ Corner for required certifications and coaching resources. PYAC has a mailing list for news and updates and notes that it is always in need of volunteers to coach, officiate, or assist with field work. PYAC would like to extend a special thank you to Pepper Borton for providing many sports photos, with an option to see more or purchase photos via her photography website. One testimonial from Executive Director Eddie Van Vlack states, “The people involved. We have a very dedicated staff and wonderful volunteers!”
