• Ages: 3–5 years old
• Schedule: Morning and afternoon preschool programs during regular school hours from 9 AM to 3:30 PM; children may be enrolled in either the morning or afternoon program and do not attend all day
Hands On Art & Play Preschool Enrichment Classes was established in 2000 by Teacher Jennifer and has been in its current space for over 20 years. The program offers morning and afternoon preschool programs, summer camps, and enrichment classes, with flexible options for children to attend 1–5 days a week in a small mixed-age group that focuses on hands-on play and an arts-based curriculum. The preschool includes outdoor play almost every day, art every day with new and ongoing projects, a weekly dramatic theater class taught by Northwest Children’s Theater, frequent educational guests, a Music & Movement program with local children’s musicians, and monthly visits from artists and musicians through World Fusion Events.
Founder Jennifer has a BA in Art and Counseling from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Hands On is recognized by the Oregon Environmental Council as an Eco-Healthy Child Care provider. Hands On Art & Play partners with local children’s programs such as Northwest Children’s Theater, Portland Early Learning–Adventures in Spanish, The Everybody Dance Project, Soccer Shots, and The Independent Dance Project, and invites local professionals including firefighters, EMTs, botanists, musicians, artists, soccer coaches, dance instructors, and yoga teachers into the classroom.
Parent testimonials describe a nurturing, positive, and accepting environment, with teachers Jennifer, Julie, Kathy, and Serena mentioned by name for their attentiveness and calm presence. Parents report that their children enjoy learning ABCs and numbers along with play, art, music, and dance, and that the music component leads to frequent singing at home. Other parents note that their children have attended from toddler years through preparation for kindergarten, and describe strong support from teachers during difficult preschool transitions.
