Camp programming is described as an award-winning camp program. Camps are kept small, safe and fun, and are primarily run by volunteers and experts in the field of animal welfare. Camp programming is designed to teach children age-appropriate animal welfare topics and curriculum, and campers develop and strengthen their love, appreciation, and knowledge of animals. Interactions with shelter animals depend on the safety and availability of safe and confident pets, and OHS summer camps are not appropriate for campers who are allergic to or fearful of dogs, cats or rabbits. Closed toed shoes, long pants, and shirts that cover the midriff and shoulders are required for safe pet interactions, and campers who are not wearing required clothing will be unable to interact with animals. Lunch and snacks are not provided, so families pack healthy lunches and snacks, and OHS is not a nut-free facility and is unable to accommodate animal and/or peanut allergies. The program does not register youth outside of their grade level except to accommodate neurovariance, and all waitlists and scholarships for Portland Summer Camps 2026 are closed.

Junior Camp Counselors are rising 9th graders and above who provide supervisory care for a group of 8–9 children of similar ages. They serve as role models by creating one-on-one relationships with campers and developing a supportive group environment, and they actively engage in Oregon Humane’s mission to create a more humane society and an inclusive camp. The Junior Counselor commitment is Monday–Friday of chosen sessions, for 8-hour daily shifts scheduled somewhere between 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Junior Camp Counselor minimum qualifications include a sincere respect and passion for animals and children, care and understanding of creating a positive learning environment, the ability to work well in a small community and have fun, and punctuality, flexibility, energy, and enthusiasm. Preferred qualifications include previous animal experience, previous childcare experience, and previous camp experience.

Oregon Humane’s mission is to transform compassion into action through life-changing programs that support and celebrate the human-animal connection, including adoption, veterinary care, education, humane law enforcement, and legislation. Oregon Humane also offers pets for adoption at partner locations throughout the Portland and Salem areas for the convenience of prospective adopters.
