Big Lake Youth Camp has operated with the goal of building relationships, learning new skills, and having fun in a positive environment since 1962. Its Christ-centered program states that it illustrates that faith in action is fun. The Abba's Child Grief Recovery Camp is a free, support-based counseling week for children ages 7 to 17 who have experienced the death of an immediate family member, and includes two-hour daily support group sessions for children to interact with peers facing similar loss. The stated goal for Abba's Child is to offer a place where kids can meet others experiencing similar emotions, receive accepting support from professionals, and have a blast at camp.
Big Lake Youth Camp is a coed, overnight sleepaway program with 7-day residential sessions and a Christian affiliation. REG Camps are the core 7-day program where campers choose a primary activity for mornings and rotate through other activities in the afternoons. RAD Camps go beyond the REG program with on- and off-site experiences and a full-day focus on a chosen activity for ages 13–17. Adventure Camp introduces younger children to summer camping with a slower pace and a slightly shorter week, offering a taste of all activities instead of one primary activity.
The camp also offers several training tracks for older campers. The RAD to Staff program for ages 15–17 combines leadership training with RAD Camp activities and mentorship, and participants receive a certificate of achievement upon successful completion. The Counselor in Training (CIT) program has participants assist a counselor with a cabin of 7–9-year-old campers to learn what is involved in being a camp counselor. The Staff in Training (SIT) program allows participants to observe and try staff roles such as instructor of land activities, instructor of water activities, office or headquarters staff, and maintenance staff. The Wrangler in Training (WIT) program has participants shadow and work with wranglers and horses and assist in the horsemanship program, and it requires some basic horse experience. Participation in the RAD to Staff, CIT, SIT, and WIT programs does not guarantee a future position as a Big Lake staff member.
