Camp LEAD is a week-long camp where participants explore outdoor-related jobs during the day and work with outdoor professionals. Campers cook meals together, set up their sleeping quarters and tents, and take part in Camp LEAD games and curriculum. During the week they complete light trail maintenance, tree trimming and fire fuels reduction, facilities maintenance, painting, and participate in LEAD (Leadership, Empowerment, Advocacy, Development) curriculum and team-building.
• Ages: 16–18 years old
• Schedule: Week-long sessions in July 2026, with 21 work hours over the course of the week
• Price: Compensation $16/hr.
2026 will be the 11th year of this opportunity. Each group of up to 10 youth is supervised by at least 4 counselors. A t-shirt, work-shirt, personal protective equipment (PPE), and all tools, camping equipment, and food are provided, and campers need to be dropped off and picked up from the camping area. The program is part of Heart of Oregon Corps, whose mission is: “Heart of Oregon Corps empowers youth and young adults through employment, job training, education, and service to Central Oregon communities.” Youth work on hands-on projects that benefit the Central Oregon community, such as public lands conservation, wildfire fuels reduction, building affordable housing, providing childcare for local families, and recycling. There is a COYCC bridge program for up to 8 Camp LEAD participants to work Monday–Thursday for an additional 3 weeks with COYCC crews starting July 27th and ending on August 13th. The application deadline is May 2026, and enrollment paperwork will be due June 2026.
