Since 2018, STEM Like a Girl has been creating a place where girls in grades 3–5 and their adult can explore STEM together through these workshops. The mission of STEM Like a Girl is to excite and empower girls with knowledge and confidence in STEM to become future problem solvers and leaders. The organization reports 1500+ workshop participants, 50+ workshops hosted, and over $11,000 in financial assistance provided.

The leadership team includes Sarah Foster (Founder & Executive Director), Courtney Davis (Secretary), Jamie Gibbs (Treasurer), Aurae Beidler (Vice Chair), Rachelle Cheung, Cami Walker, and Gianna Giacolona. The program states that its hands-on workshops encourage 3rd–5th grade girls to explore STEM in a supportive and fun environment, and that activities are designed to excite girls and introduce them to real-world STEM applications. It also states that adults work with their girl to solve fun science and engineering challenges, and that the workshops strengthen family bonds in shared STEM learning experiences and spark curiosity and confidence beyond the event.

STEM Like a Girl describes its approach as affordable and research-backed and notes that half-day workshops offer an affordable and approachable way for families. The organization states that it envisions a world in which girls’ interest in STEM is nurtured, celebrated, and valued, and that it believes the term “like a girl” should empower young girls. It also states that it believes girls are just as smart and capable of achieving success in STEM as boys, that STEM education for girls needs to start in elementary school, and that exposing girls to hands-on STEM activities increases their self-confidence and problem-solving skills regardless of career path.

The program states that young girls today have the ability to shape STEM fields in the future and that parents and other adult caregivers play a key role in their girl’s developing confidence and interest in science and engineering. It also states that parents want to foster STEM identities for their girls but need resources to get started, and that every family should have the opportunity to participate in STEM programs regardless of background, income, or education level. The organization believes that parents and girls working together on hands-on science and engineering challenges promotes family learning and increases STEM identity in girls.

STEM Like a Girl states that female STEM professionals can help mentor and educate girls about careers in science and engineering, and that girls need to see strong women in STEM fields to feel supported in pursuing their own interests. It also states that mentors can encourage girls to explore growing and rewarding STEM career paths and that women who support girls and each other will reshape STEM fields for women.

Parent and participant comments include a parent reporting their daughter saying, “I’m a girl who does STEM. I’m a STEM girl!” after a workshop, and a 5th grade girl saying she enjoyed spending time with her mom and thought the bath bomb making was very fun. Other parents describe the event as engaging and inspiring, mention excitement, inclusion, and racial diversity of volunteers, and note that activities were age appropriate, well organized, fun, and challenging. A workshop volunteer states that the workshops are well run and that the kids have fun, and a 4th grade girl says, “It was so fun! When is the next one?” The organization also thanks its sponsors and partners for their support.
