Temple Ohav Shalom Center for Early Learning (TOSCEL)

Temple Ohav Shalom Center for Early Learning (TOSCEL) offers creative play, small group activities, large group activities, and art exploration for children. The program takes place in a home-like, comfortable facility that is set up for early childhood learning and play.

Temple Ohav Shalom Center for Early Learning (TOSCEL) is an early childhood program for children ages 2–6 that is inspired by the philosophy of Reggio Emilia schools and guided by Jewish values and teachings. Its mission states that it creates a welcoming and inclusive community that celebrates the uniqueness of all families and develops a life-long love of learning. The program reflects the standards and guidelines set forth by NAEYC, a professional early childhood organization, and describes its staff as creative and caring with ideal teacher-to-child ratios. TOSCEL offers age and developmentally appropriate programs that are built upon one another through a developmental approach that focuses on the whole child, in a warm, nurturing environment where a love of learning is established and nurtured. The community welcomes all families into the preschool community and celebrates the diversity and uniqueness of all families, and the curriculum encourages children to question, investigate, and develop the skills necessary for future success.

In August 2011, the Center was selected as one of three Jewish early childhood programs in the greater Pittsburgh area to participate in the Pittsburgh Jewish Early Childhood Education Initiative (JECEI) program. This initiative is supported by the Centennial Fund for the Jewish Future, an endowment within the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh Foundation and the Agency for Jewish Learning.
