Hideaway Day Camp has operated as a private day camp for over 60 years and was founded in 1961 by Charles and LaVera Leonard. The camp is owned and directed by Roland and Mary Jo D’Ortone, who have lived on the property for almost 30 years and raised their three daughters at Hideaway. The program enrolls approximately 500 campers each season and uses professional teaching staff. “The true camp experience” is Hideaway’s core belief that children need social interaction with peers and interaction with nature, and the camp states that it aims to create a safe and fun environment where campers improve present skills, develop new interests, uncover hidden talents, and learn teamwork in every activity. ABC’s Good Morning America visited Hideaway Day Camp and included campers, parents, and staff in a segment about germs.
