ProJeCt of Easton Youth Programs (SIZZLE!®, Family Literacy, Student Success Program)

ProJeCt of Easton Youth Programs (SIZZLE!®, Family Literacy, Student Success Program) includes the SIZZLE!® summer camp, the Family Literacy program, and the Student Success Program, along with access to Food Pantry services and the ASSIST emergency support program. The SIZZLE!® summer camp is a free program for Easton Area School District children in grades K–5 that focuses on addressing the “summer slide” with a goal of increasing or maintaining reading scores. The Family Literacy program includes adult education classes where parents work on their own literacy skills while their children work on early literacy skills to become better prepared for kindergarten, and the Student Success Program is a school-based life skills and mentoring program.

ProJeCt of Easton states that its mission is to build a better community by helping people help themselves and to prepare people to succeed in work, school, and life by providing support and instruction in skills needed to break the cycle of poverty and achieve their goals. The organization reports a legacy that began in 1968, notes that literacy education services started with a volunteer adult tutoring program in 1979, and that an emergency assistance program was established in 1985. It also reports that after-school programs, a summer literacy day camp, and the Easton Middle School Success Program were introduced during the 1990s, and that its Food Pantry has operated for over 30 years.

The agency describes its programs as a continuum of research-based services with a commitment to high fidelity implementation of evidence-based practices and notes that it provides services that impact more than 7,000 people each year. ProJeCt of Easton reports that all programs are offered free of charge to low-income, at-risk residents of the Lehigh Valley and that it provides one of the best workforce preparation programs in the region. It also states that ASSIST is an emergency support program that assists people who are facing homelessness or other emergencies.

The leadership team includes roles such as Executive Director, Director of Programs, Director of Finance, Early Childhood Manager, School-Based Program Manager, Student Support Coordinator, Food Pantry Coordinator & ESL Teacher, and multiple teachers and case managers in areas such as early childhood, ESL, GED, ABE, and literacy. The Board of Directors includes professionals from health care, banking, accounting, law, higher education, ministry, and local businesses, along with a Board Emeritus member.

ProJeCt of Easton reports that it was founded by a coalition of Protestant, Jewish, and Catholic community leaders and that it builds its services through partnerships with community organizations, faith groups, government, and volunteers. It states that programs are offered free of charge thanks to donors and community partners and that it has received a $1 million challenge gift toward the purchase of the former Confluence Community Center, with an invitation to the community to match the gift.

A GED student in one of ProJeCt’s programs shared that they returned to the program after four months in prison, that their late father wanted to see them graduate, and that they are focused on moving toward their goals and dreams while showing their child how important education is.
