Founded in 1939 as a part-time venture at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Harrisburg, the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg began full-time operation in 1943 in a one-room building at its present site on Berryhill Street and moved to its present Berryhill Street location in 1950. The John N. Hall location opened in 1981, and a former Cumberland Road location opened in 1997 and later transitioned to Downey School at 1313 Monroe Street until the COVID-19 pandemic. For over 89 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg has been at the forefront of youth development.
The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg is to serve as a neighborhood-based organization committed to serving youth of all backgrounds in developing self-esteem and character and to help them become responsible citizens by providing physical, recreational, social, educational, and vocational programs. The organization values trust, mentorship, caring, teamwork, and safety and states that making a difference begins at the community level. The Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg is part of a nationwide affiliation with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and a statewide alliance with the Pennsylvania Alliance, is a nonprofit organization with tax-deductible donations, and is EITC Approved EIO and NAP Approved.
Triple Play strives to improve the overall health of Club members ages 6–18 by increasing daily physical activity and teaching them about good nutrition and healthy relationships. Torch Clubs are chartered, small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. The diplomas2Degrees program is a college readiness program for ages 13 and older that provides services to guide Club members working toward high school graduation and prepare for post-secondary education and career success.
Camp Tracy is a Summer Enrichment Camp that provides a safe place away from home during out-of-school time and prevents learning loss during the summer months. Camp Tracy includes several Boys & Girls Clubs of America evidence-based components, field trips, and meals. Through community support, the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg provides kids and teens a safe place to develop essential skills, enhance academic knowledge, make lasting connections, and have fun daily, and corporate partnerships support the advancement of Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg youth. Capital Region Water and the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) are noted partners that help keep the Susquehanna River clean.
