The Children's Center of Mercer County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to provide educational, developmental, and social opportunities for children, regardless of their challenges. It was originally created to educate mentally challenged and physically impaired children in the area and has grown and evolved to become an academy for excellence in early childhood development. The center provides academic, developmental, physical, social/emotional, and behavioral opportunities to support the holistic development of each child and provides quality early childhood education for students within the community. It maintains personnel policies that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, religious creed, disability, ancestry, national origin, age, or sex.

In 1918, the Sharon Rotary Club created a project called “Expenses for Treatment of Crippled Children,” which led to the formation of the Mercer County Crippled Children’s Society in 1937. Volunteers built the current building between 1954 and 1958, and by 2000 the organization was renamed the Children’s Center of Mercer County. Through partnerships with the Hermitage School District and the Intermediate Unit, the center provides developmental services and connects families with additional supports, and it houses the Hermitage School District’s Head Start and Pre-K Counts classrooms.

One parent described the school as a fantastic experience for their child, noting that the staff and teachers are welcoming and nurturing, the students are inclusive, and the parents are friendly and helpful, and gave the program 4 stars while recommending it.
