About
PA Vent Camp offers activities such as zip-lining, rock climbing on a rock wall, board games, and time at a pond. Campers also take part in arts and crafts, spend time in a tree house, visit a wildlife center, and ride on a pontoon boat. The program includes both crafts and other structured recreation throughout the camp session.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Week-long summer camp held in June each year; Vent Camp June 21–25, 2026. PA Vent Camp also offers Horizons, a weekend retreat for adult campers ages 21+ that takes place in September each year (Horizons September 11–13, 2026).
PA Vent Camp is committed to providing the ultimate summer camp experience to children and adults who rely on mechanical ventilation to breathe. The week-long summer camp held in June each year is open to children ages 5 to 18 who use any sort of mechanical ventilation, including ventilators, BiPAP, or CPAP. PA Vent Camp also offers a program called Horizons, a weekend retreat for adult campers ages 21 and older that takes place in September each year.
PA Vent Camp is staffed entirely by volunteers who represent a variety of disciplines, including nurses, physicians, and respiratory, occupational, physical, speech, and recreational therapists. Volunteers also include general helpers who serve as activities staff members, camp partners, cooks, and errand-runners, including a helper known as “Walmart Joe.” Thanks to a group of respiratory therapists at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, led by Respiratory Therapist Pam Smith, summer camp for these individuals became a reality.
PA Vent Camp held its first “week without limits” in 1993. For more than 25 years, PA Vent Camp has maximized abilities and minimized disabilities. As Respiratory Therapist Pam Smith stated in 1995, “For more than 25 years, PA Vent Camp has maximized abilities and minimized disabilities. We provide a week free from limitations.”
