Pittsburgh Zoo Education Programs & Zoo Camp takes place within the zoo’s Education Complex, which includes five classrooms, a library, and a 300-seat lecture hall that was later expanded to add more classrooms, teacher resource areas, and an animal holding area. Teen Science programming connected to the Education Programs uses a dedicated classroom in the Safari Amphitheater, which was renovated to allow more guest space. The Pittsburgh Zoo Education Programs & Zoo Camp are part of an education department that has grown enough to expand its Education Complex and has reached over 400,000 guests in peak years. The programs operate within a zoo and aquarium that is one of only six major zoo and aquarium combinations in the United States and is home to more than 8,000 animals representing over 600 species. The organization’s mission statement is: “We connect people to wildlife, inspiring our communities to conserve nature for future generations.”
The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and has earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating. It is American Humane Conservation-certified and accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Zoological Association of America, and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, and in late 2024 it celebrated AZA accreditation. Leadership for the organization includes Dr. Jeremy Goodman, President & CEO; Rachel Askey, Chief Operations Officer; and Ron Gruca, Chief Advancement Officer.
The zoo’s education programs and camp are part of a regional attraction whose research and conservation projects are recognized globally and represented on all seven continents and five oceans. The organization is a key member of the AZA SAFE Red Panda program and operates the International Conservation Center, a 724-acre research and conservation facility dedicated to the African elephant in Somerset, Pennsylvania. The zoo reports work on enhancing urban biodiversity, including planting trees and educational programs, and partners with PPG in naming the Aquarium. The Board of Directors consists of members of the community who volunteer their time as part of the Zoological Society of Pittsburgh’s Board of Directors.
