Sarah Heinz House Afterschool and Summer Programs are part of an organization that has provided youth programs for area kids for more than 100 years, with a focus on character, service, and leadership. The programs serve kids in grades 1 through 12 and are open afterschool, in the evenings, and on Saturdays. Volunteers and staff undergo comprehensive background checks, and the environment is described as inclusive, embracing diversity and celebrating differences. The mission of Sarah Heinz House is to empower all members, especially those who need it most, to laugh, learn, and lead, inspiring them to reach their full potential.
Sarah Heinz House has a history that began in 1901 when Howard Heinz founded a small boys' club on Pittsburgh's North Side called the Covode House, opened its doors to girls in 1903, commissioned a new building in tribute to Sarah Heinz in 1913, and created Heinz House Camp in 1921. In the 1930s, Sarah Heinz House emerged as a trailblazer among the National Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and in 2007 it completed a 75,000-square-foot environmentally green-certified building linked to the original structure. In 2023, Sarah Heinz House revitalized its role as a community hub, and in 2024 it joined Allegheny County's Department of Human Services Agency on Aging. The organization has a critical connection with the National Boys and Girls Clubs of America, collaborates with others to magnify its impact, and is fueled by people and organizations who share the desire to change the world one community at a time.
