About

UPMC Wellness Center Swim School offers year-round swim lessons, including group, private, semi-private, and adapted private swim lessons. Adapted private swim lessons are available for children with physical or cognitive disabilities and emphasize water safety skills and proper swimming concepts. Group lessons follow level-based lesson plans.

• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are available many days of the week during Wellness Center hours, with private, semi-private, and adapted private lessons running 30 minutes each.

For any lessons, only one spectator is allowed, and swimmers are encouraged to come dressed in their swimsuits. Participants must wash or sanitize their hands when entering and exiting the center, and hand sanitizer is located inside the front entrance and at many stations throughout the center. All participants are required to check in at the front desk to sign a Swim Lesson Waiver, and swimmers are responsible for providing their own co-participant for semi-private lessons. Year-round swim lessons are open to both members and non-members of the wellness center.

The UPMC Wellness Center is described as the area’s only full service center offering fitness, nutrition, group exercise classes, yoga, swimming, family and kids programs, health and wellness coaching, spa, and more. The center states that it is dedicated to members’ and clients’ safety.

The UPMC Wellness Center is named in honor of Wilfred R. (Pete) Cameron, who donated $5 million in 1999 to The Washington Hospital for the construction of a community wellness center. His donation is described as a way to show appreciation to community members who supported his family business, Cameron Beverages, for over 100 years.

Parent and adult testimonials about the broader wellness center mention trainers teaching and motivating participants, changes in eating habits through the LEAP Program, and sessions on nutrition that emphasized both exercise and diet. One testimonial notes long-term training with a specific trainer whose knowledge influenced the person’s workout routine.
