Founded in 1990 as a 501(c)3 arts non-profit, Creative York has been making the arts accessible to individuals ages 3 to 103 for over 35 years. Its mission states that the arts are essential to development and self-expression, and that Creative York is dedicated to inspiring the community through arts education, gallery experiences, and outreach programs. On average, 14 art exhibits are showcased in Creative York’s galleries each year, and the Kerlin Gallery and The Art Lab feature local, regional, and national artists’ work, as well as educational exhibits, classes, and art events.

The leadership team includes Executive Director Lyn Bergdoll; Artistic Director Mindy Christian; Director of Education Amber Herb; Marketing Coordinator Moe Boyer; and Gallery Hostess & Office Administrator Jodi Kohl. Lyn Bergdoll has almost 40 years of experience working with non-profits and extensive community involvement, and previously served as the executive director at The Belmont Theatre in York, Pennsylvania, for 10 years. Mindy is a graduate of Towson University with a degree in psychology and art and has been honored with the 2016 York Public Arts Award from the City of York for the Art in the Parks Program. Amber Herb is a graduate of York College of Pennsylvania’s Fine Art Program. Moe Boyer holds a B.A. in Graphic Design from Millersville University and an MBA in Marketing from the University of Phoenix and is a creative professional with over 20 years of experience in design, marketing, and community arts engagement.

Local schools use Creative York to supplement and enhance the education of their students, including literary arts, visual arts, and other curricula. Over 1,000 community members have been impacted through Creative York’s outreach programs this year. Art in the Parks, Creative York’s longest-running, most popular outreach program, features art-making activities that teach social skills, respect for others, group decision-making, teamwork, and positive self-expression to more than 300 children yearly. Mindy cultivates and maintains community relationships with arts organizations, community members, and diverse community programs, and serves on the board of the York County Hispanic Coalition. Moe’s background includes supporting small businesses, collaborating with non-profits, and organizing community-focused art events.

One testimonial from Angie Kot notes being impressed by the gallery and teaching spaces and states that Creative York is “so much more than a gallery” and “features artist’s work while nurturing the artistic spirit of the next generation.” Bob and Ellen Ehlenbeck state that they “love Creative York,” mentioning art camps and classes for all ages, gallery exhibits and installations, team building activities, and community outreach “for young and old,” and describe the staff as talented and innovative. Another testimonial from Cathy Drapiewski describes a beginner ceramic class as “wonderful” and mentions the joy of coming to the studio every week and spending time being creative, enjoying others’ company, and learning new things. Visitors are asked not to bring their own food or drinks into the facility without permission, and Creative York allows working service animals in its facility in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
