Hermann Sons Life Camp operates at the Hilltop site, where campers and counselors live in air-conditioned cabins that include showers, toilets, and sinks. Campers sit with their dorm roommates for all meals, which are served cafeteria-style in air-conditioned dining halls. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association. The HSL Youth Foundation Inc. operates this nonprofit, coed summer camp program and also operates dance schools in several Texas communities. The stated mission of Hermann Sons Life Camp is to provide a quality, safe, and caring summer camp program that develops healthy friendships and enriches the lives of both campers and staff by fostering self-esteem and independence through exposure to new experiences, group living, and play. The camp’s counselors are mainly college students, and others come from overseas, and activities take place under the caring guidance of trained staff. Hermann Sons Life has been strengthening community since 1861 and, in its 160-year history, has served tens of thousands of Texans of all ages. Built on a foundation of mutual aid, community involvement, and caring for others, Hermann Sons Life offers members access to benefits that include a summer camp, a dance program, a discount program, and more through the purchase of a life insurance policy or annuity. The investment of members’ premium dollars supports community service initiatives, and each year members volunteer hundreds of hours and donate thousands of dollars to people and organizations in their communities.
