About
Color Me Empowered Art Camps are run by Color Me Empowered, an organization that works with school-aged children in out-of-school-time and in-school programs in the Dallas area. The program is connected to more than 30 completed public art projects in Dallas and has involved over 3,500 students in its work. One visible project linked to the organization is an installation of 50 two-foot aluminum cut-outs of the iconic Dallas Pegasus on the back wall of the Color Me Empowered HQ building, created during the 2020 2nd Annual WestSIDE Stories Art Festival, where 50 artists paired with 50 kids to make the pieces.
Color Me Empowered Art Camps are part of an organization that was organized in 2008 by Kristen E. Rice, an art teacher at Polk Elementary in Dallas ISD. The leadership team includes Kristen Rice as Founder and Managing Director, along with co-organizers Chavalia Mwamba and Amy Kilpatrick. The organization states core values of Creativity, Optimism, Kindness, Consistency, Self-Respect, Compassion, Cultural Sensitivity, Sustainability, and Transparency. Its mission states that it works with school-aged children in the Dallas area and that it believes giving children the opportunity to improve their immediate community will enable them to see the power of art and their ability to bring about positive change in their environment. Founder Kristen Rice has said, “It is my unyielding belief that art has the power to heal, redeem, and unite. In all my artistic endeavors, I seek to communicate this conviction,” and she also states that these ideals motivate her art instruction and that she aims to instill them in each one of her students. The organization has also hosted the WestSIDE Stories Art Festival with FGIII Fine Art Productions and has acknowledged support from sponsors including Moody Funds for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, the Office of Cultural Affairs — City of Dallas, FGIII Fine Art Productions, Sunflower Catering, DJ Braxton, and Andrea Lamarsaude — Fine Art | Marketing for Artists | Curation.
