Founded in 2001, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft has a mission to inspire and connect people to the art and process of making. It is described as a dynamic hub for contemporary craft, where visitors can see thought-provoking exhibitions, tour the studios of working artists, participate in hands-on programming, and explore the Craft Garden. Free docent-led tours are available for groups if scheduled in advance. Membership provides discounts on workshops, camps, retail events, and art supplies, early registration to craft camps, access to members-only events, and an e-newsletter highlighting contemporary craft with invitations to programs.

The leadership team includes Executive Director Leila Cartier and Education + Programs Manager Jeniffer Perales Garcia, along with staff in roles such as deputy director, curator + exhibitions director, marketing manager + lead designer, development manager, facility manager, retail + sales coordinator, visitor services associates, reception + retail associate, and digital content manager. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is supported by individual donors and members and is funded in part by several foundations and arts organizations, and it is a member of the Houston Museum District and the Midtown Arts District. Partners include Arts Connect Houston, Art Supply on Almeda, Houston Art Partners, Houston Center for Photography, Houston Museum District, Midtown Cultural Arts & Entertainment District, North American Reciprocal Museum Association, Reciprocal Organization of Associated Museums, and Urban Harvest.
