About
Youth Volleyball introduces players to volleyball fundamentals through youth volleyball lessons and youth volleyball games. Participants practice specific skills including serving, setting, hitting, blocking, and digging. Each season includes one 60-minute practice per week and one game per week.
• Ages: 8–14 years old
• Schedule: One 60-minute practice and one game per week
Volleyball was invented in a YMCA, and each volleyball program is structured and led by experienced volunteer coaches and staff. Every YMCA volleyball game begins with a Youth Sports Pledge and emphasizes team spirit, sportsmanship, fair play, positive competition, and family involvement. A multi-sport jersey is required for volleyball, and the purchase of a game jersey is required for each participant, with optional shorts available for purchase.
The youth sports season dates are set by session. Winter registration runs from November 10–January 11, with practice starting January 12, games starting January 24, and the last game on February 28. Spring registration runs from February 2–March 29, with practice starting March 30, games starting April 11, and the last game on May 16. Dates are subject to change based on weather.
The program’s stated focus is on participation and fun, and it develops basic skills of the game through practices and games while teaching every child sportsmanship and values necessary to be successful in life. YMCA programs bring people together to develop strong, positive relationships with others in their neighborhoods and communities. YMCA International Services, founded in 1978, provides client-centered programs to refugees, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations in the Houston area and assists clients in becoming self-sufficient through education, career services, case management, cultural orientation, and immigration legal assistance.
One parent coach shared that coaching a YMCA volleyball team led to positive connections with the players and their families and created many laughs and memories. Another YMCA client story describes how YMCA assistance supported a family who arrived in the United States on Special Immigrant Visas in finding employment, accessing ESL classes, and building a future in Houston.
