About

Houston School of Art & Design offers kids’ art classes with individualized, small-group instruction in drawing and painting. The classes use watercolor, tempera, pastel, colored pencil, mixed media, graphite, gouache, alcohol markers, acrylic, and oil, and the school also offers teen classes, adult classes, private art lessons, and seasonal art camps.

About the provider

Houston School of Art & Design was founded on the teaching methods of Master Artist Thomas S. Cleveland, and Amber Cleveland continued the legacy. Amber Cleveland is the director, artist, instructor, and manager of the program alongside a team of hand-picked professional artists. The school says it was recognized by the Houston Chronicle as a 2025 Finalist for Best After School Program, and students have won awards in the Houston Art Society and Lone Star Art Guild art shows and participated in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and Art of Conservation contests.

Flexible enrollment with no long-term contracts. Makeup classes are offered with limits; the contact page says a rescheduling fee applies and rescheduled classes must be completed during the same semester or fees are forfeited. No refunds. For students under 18, there is a 15-minute grace period for late pickup; after that, a $15 late fee plus $1 per minute per child. Custom scheduling is available in most cases.
