The Youth & Family Programs are part of the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA, which has offered services in the community for over 65 years and opened its first offices in Arlington on October 1, 1958, after a $400,000 fundraising campaign led by then-Mayor Tom Vandergriff. The YMCA states that it is a non-profit, volunteer-led charitable organization that engages more than 10,000 families through programs, services, and events and mobilizes local communities to effect lasting, meaningful change. According to its mission statement, the YMCA focuses on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and it states that it does not turn anyone away for their inability to pay and that its doors are open to all in the community. The organization reports that it serves local neighbors representing over 100 countries and that it provides children and adults with different abilities the chance to have fun in a safe, welcoming atmosphere. The YMCA also notes that volunteers coach sports teams and distribute food to those in need and that it offers a Summer Food Program for kids.
