About

Quinta Mazatlan Programs take place in gardens around a historic home, in natural areas, on walking trails, and in exhibits, science labs, and classrooms for learning and exploring. The programs are part of an urban sanctuary where visitors can see birds and other wildlife that live in or pass through the Lower Rio Grande Valley’s Tamaulipan Brushland ecosystem. The Center for Urban Ecology (CUE), in partnership with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, will promote experiential learning about urban ecology, environmental science, and other fields for students and adults of all ages when the new 15-acre center opens in Spring 2026.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Program hours are available Tuesday–Saturday, with extended hours on Thursday.

Quinta Mazatlan opened in 2006. The mission of Quinta Mazatlan is to serve as a sanctuary connecting people to the history, beauty, and wonder of the natural world, and to work with partners to advance environmental education, eco-tourism, and the environment for the health of all. The Center for Urban Ecology (UTRGV) focuses on environmental issues and solutions to support a healthier environment for people and wildlife. The leadership team includes Executive Director Colleen Curran Hook, Marketing & Events Supervisor Samantha Gutierrez, Education Supervisor Taylor Zavala, Urban Ecologist John Brush, Operations Coordinator Cecilia Gomez, Maintenance Supervisor Bernie Casas, Maintenance Technician Jaime Villanueva, Operations Manager Victor De Leon, Land Steward Hector Briones, and Environmental Education Specialist Josue Ayala.
