About
Camp Freedom is an overnight summer camp for children with diabetes where campers can relate to peers who also have diabetes. Camp Freedom summer camp experiences are part of the programs and services of the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association (STJDA). At summer programs connected with Camp Freedom, breakfast is served from 8 am to 9 am and lunch is served from 12 pm to 1 pm.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: Summer programs with breakfast from 8 am–9 am and lunch from 12 pm–1 pm
• Price: STJDA will be offering FREE summer meals to children 0–18 at all summer programs.
The mission of the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association (STJDA) is personal empowerment, family support, community awareness and public advocacy. STJDA was founded in 2011, and Camp Freedom was started in 2012. STJDA has been serving the Rio Grande Valley for over 14 years, and Camp Freedom is one of its programs.
STJDA partners with Weslaco ISD and other mid-Valley school districts on the Stomp Out Diabetes program. STJDA partners with area hospitals to provide Shot Spots Bears, which are Build-a-Bear bears with sewn-on patches to help children learn about insulin injections and insulin pump site rotation. STJDA distributes Shot Spots Bears at all Valley hospitals to newly-diagnosed children. STJDA promotes awareness through the annual 5K Sweet Run and programs like Stomp Out Diabetes, and provides training for schools and other youth-serving organizations so staff and volunteers know how to care for children with diabetes and look for signs of diabetes in students.
As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, STJDA relies completely on the generosity of friends, corporate sponsors, and donors. This institution is an equal opportunity provider. One parent of a child with diabetes said, “The program is a huge help in educating my whole family about how to help our son. Thank you for the personal attention and services.”
