The organization’s history in Central Texas dates back to the 1970s, including the creation of a United Way Youth Contingency Fund in 1976 and the adoption of a metropolitan structure in 1994. The YMCA of Central Texas’ Licensed Child Care Department is the largest provider of child care in Williamson County and established its first school-based after-school program in 1989 by partnering with Round Rock ISD.

The YMCA of Central Texas states core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility as the foundation of its summer camp programs, and staff model and praise these values when they see them. The organization describes its camp culture as emphasizing accomplishment, belonging, and character, and notes that campers gain a sense of accomplishment by trying new activities, overcoming challenges, conquering fears, and learning skills. Preschool at the Y includes enrichments such as swimming, gymnastics, and soccer, an infant/toddler nursery, meals and snacks provided, newly renovated classrooms, one indoor playground, and two outdoor playgrounds.

The YMCA of Central Texas identifies itself as the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility and states that it has been listening and responding to communities for nearly 160 years. It offers financial assistance for memberships so that programs and services are accessible regardless of affordability and states a commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment where all are welcome and have access to programs and services. Volunteer and staff leadership work to grow diverse representation, and branch boards recruit community leaders with time, talent, treasure, and cultural connections to help expand the YMCA mission in their areas.
