Encore Stage & Studio was founded in 1967 as The Children’s Theatre of Arlington, and for over 50 years it has involved hundreds of thousands of young people in theatre. Its mission is to inspire young people to develop the creativity, empathy, and confidence they need to create meaningful connections with peers and have a positive impact in their communities. The organization describes its work as Theatre for Kids, by Kids and provides inclusive opportunities for a diverse community of future thinkers, creators, and leaders.
Encore Stage & Studio has been nationally recognized with the Twink Lynch Organizational Achievement Award from the American Association of Community Theatres. It has been a featured non-profit in the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington since 2010 and participates in the federal government’s Combined Federal Campaign. It receives grant funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Arlington Cultural Affairs division of Arlington Economic Development, and the Arlington Commission for the Arts.
Encore Stage & Studio frequently offers discounted and complimentary tickets to families who would not otherwise have access to theatre, offers need-based scholarships to all of its education programs, and states that no child has to pay to participate in its productions. It offers outreach to underserved children and youth with community partners and frequently partners with local schools and PTAs in northern Virginia to bring programs directly to students. Audience guidelines include purchasing concessions for the lobby only, keeping cell phones and lighted devices off during performances, and not recording live performances without written permission.
Parent and media feedback includes comments such as “So inspiring! We loved this kid/teen cast & crew led production of The Lion King...” from 4DMV Kids, “For the youngster set, Encore is the region’s gold standard...” from the Sun Gazette, and “The quality of the show is made all the more remarkable by how much its youthful participants drive the show.” from the Prince George’s Sentinel.
