About
Steve & Kate's Camp offers a wide range of activities, including coding, robotics, sewing in a sewing salon, baking in a bakery, and hands-on projects in a Tinker Lab and Media Lab. Campers can also spend time filming, creating stop-motion animation, making and building things like marble mazes and forts, and taking part in Sports & Rec, water play with inflatable slip n’ slides and a giant sprinkler, and a gameroom and lounge with tabletop games. The camp includes S&K traditions and weekly specials such as Find Chuckie, Friday Pie-Day, Carnival Day, a virtual reality experience, interactive art apps, a movement workshop, a popup petting zoo, and a go-kart experience, as well as time for lounging.
• Ages: 4–12 years old
• Schedule: Summer day camp running June 18–August 14, with camp hours from 8:00am to 6:00pm and closure on July 3
Way back in 1980, Steve and Kate started the camp and it has since grown to more than 70 locations from Manhattan to Manhattan Beach. The camp states that all year long kids are in rigid structure, and that in summer at Steve & Kate’s, campers choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long, and that this experience is both pure joy and a kind of training ground for life where they are empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. Steve & Kate's Camp reports that it is staffed with people who share a talent for connecting with kids, and that staff dedicated specifically to supporting youngest campers, called Youngest Camper Support Staff, are part of the program. The camp describes itself as built so kids are in charge of their choices and parents have flexible, refundable passes, and notes that campers are empowered to make their own choices and be their own bosses.
Steve & Kate's Camp offers summer day camps for kids aged 4–12, with more than 90 locations, and also offers mentorship programs for children aged 14 and 15, with availability that may vary by location. The organization states that parents can buy any number of day passes, send their child to camp any day, drop off and pick up at any time within the 8:00am–6:00pm camp hours, and receive automatic full refunds for unused purchased Day Passes at the end of the camp season. It also states that Summer Pass holders receive an automatic refund of the difference if they do not use enough days to justify the cost. All-inclusive rates are described as including all camp hours from 8:00am to 6:00pm, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest the child.
The camp notes that it keeps kids “fired up with food they love” in partnership with fan favorite restaurants, and that a mouth-watering array of tasty, nourishing food is included. Menus are described as including rotating specials as well as healthy snacks and sides that kids can grab whenever they want. As summer approaches, registered families receive an email with a link to a virtual camp orientation that covers local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures, how to check in and out each day, what to bring and not bring, and additional camp details.
Testimonials about Steve & Kate’s Camp include comments from Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, who says that children at the camp “blossom and discover a freedom of identity” and that “kids find their thumbprint at Steve & Kate’s.” Apple’s Hot News states that “If kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that the camp did not set out to cater to children of people at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic, but that “given their philosophy, it’s no surprise so many attend.” The Washington Post describes Steve & Kate’s Camp as a blend of traditional camp with a modern, tech-savvy touch, with a laid-back aura and Silicon Valley-inspired innovative approaches to programming and payment. The Chicago Tribune states that “Working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.” The camp lists Alita as the Director.
