• Ages: 5–12 years old
• Schedule: Jun 18–Aug 14, 8:00am–6:00pm (closed July 3)
The camp includes a Gameroom & Lounge with tabletop games, marble mazes, fort building, and a quiet corner with sensory objects and a bookshelf, as well as Carnival Day on the last day of camp with carnival games, extra treats, and chances to win prizes. Lunch and snacks are included, with options such as pizza, Caesar salad, beef chili, creamy tomato soup, plain bagels with cream cheese, and turkey and cheese sandwiches, provided in partnership with fan favorite restaurants. The program uses an all-inclusive rate structure that covers all camp hours from 8:00am to 6:00pm, snacks and lunch, and any activities, and allows parents to buy any number of days, use drop-off and pick-up at any time during camp hours, and receive automatic full refunds for unused purchased Day Passes and partial refunds for underused Summer Passes. Campers choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long, and there is Youngest Camper Support Staff dedicated to supporting the youngest campers. The Media Lab includes film, coding, robotics, virtual reality, and interactive art apps, and S&K traditions include Find Chuckie and Friday Pie-Day.
Steve & Kate’s Camp was created in 1980. The Alexandria site is led by a Director named Alita. The camp states that all year long kids are in rigid structure and that, when summer comes, it gives them freedom to expand and evolve, with camp serving as a place where they are empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. The program notes that, as it gets closer to summer, registered families receive a link to a virtual camp orientation with information on local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures, how to check in and out each day, and what to bring, and that additional state-required paperwork must be submitted online before a child’s first day.
Testimonials about Steve & Kate’s Camp include comments from Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, who says that children at the camp blossom and discover a freedom of identity and that kids find their thumbprint there. Apple’s Hot News states that if kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve & Kate’s Camp. Variety magazine notes that many children of people at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic attend, and The Washington Post describes the camp as a blend of traditional camp with a modern, tech-savvy touch and a laid-back aura with innovative approaches to programming and payment. The Chicago Tribune states that working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.
