About

Virginia Air & Space Science Center Education Programs include immersive, hands-on experiences that bring STEM education to life through interactive aviation exhibits spanning 100 years of flight and a hands-on space exploration gallery. The programs make use of 35 hands-on exhibits, including interactive touch-table computers, a state-of-the-art digital airport, a MaxFlight simulator, a literacy center, a sonic boom experience, an IMAX theater, a planetarium, and a wind tunnel, along with 40 static STEM displays such as the Sea to Stars models in the space gallery, educational signage, the Gemini and Mercury Solarium, and additional STEM-focused displays.

The Virginia Air & Space Science Center Education Programs take place at a center that is one of only 15 official NASA Visitor Centers in the United States and the official visitor center for NASA’s Langley Research Center. The center is home to the Apollo 12 Command Module “Yankee Clipper,” the Orion Pad Abort-Test Vehicle, and Mercury 14 and Gemini space capsules. The Virginia Air & Space Science Center opened on April 5, 1992, after community leaders, the Hampton City Council, NASA, and key public officials set out in 1985 to create the center. Its stated mission is to ignite curiosity and innovation in STEM through education, discovery, and interactive experiences for explorers of all ages. The organization is recognized nationwide as a non-profit institution dedicated to preserving and interpreting the nation’s achievements in air and space exploration. Membership includes unlimited exhibit and IMAX admission for one year and free admission to more than 300 reciprocal science and natural history centers around the world through the ASTC Passport Program.
