The mission of the Y is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas has been awarded Praesidium Accreditation®, which is described as the highest honor for child abuse prevention practices by Praesidium. Community giving to the Y supports programs and services that help kids succeed, prevent drowning, prepare teens for life and help people grow healthier in spirit, mind, and body. The before and after school program is described as giving kids ages 5–12 a safe, supportive space to learn, play, and grow right before and after the school day. Every third Friday of the month, families can use Parents Night Out, which is free for YMCA members. The YMCA states that membership, programs, services, and facilities are made available regardless of a family or individual’s ability to pay the standard membership and program fees.
