About
TimberNook Loudoun County offers outdoor sensory-rich, child-directed experiences that blend the power of story with the therapeutic benefits of nature. The program uses research-backed outdoor play in child-led, nature-driven programs. It follows a research-based model that nurtures natural development and focuses on children stepping into their true self within a supportive community.
The mission of TimberNook is restoring the vital role of outdoor play in childhood and restoring children’s authentic occupation of play. The organization bases its work on research showing that children grow, learn, and develop better when given the freedom to play outside. TimberNook states that it believes play is both a fundamental right and a profound source of healing and that it champions the right to play through education, research, and hands-on opportunities. Today, TimberNook offers programs in 51 locations in 4 countries.
TimberNook’s founder has been recognized as a Glamour “Hometown Hero” for her innovative work. One researcher and professor, Dr. Anita Bundy, Sc.D., OT/L, FAOTA, FOTARA, states that play is a powerful tool that enables important learning that school curricula usually do not yield and that children learn problems can be solved in many ways. A teacher describes Angela’s message as profound and says that every educator and parent needs to learn this wisdom. One parent, Candace DiGiacomo, says her daughter loves the program and calls it one of the best programs she has seen in almost 12 years of being a parent, and she highly recommends it. A provider, Kevin Kane, notes that kids want action, movement, and drama in their play and says he loves the idea of children transforming through play, living stories, and full-on imagination come to life.
