Boxerwood Youth & Community Programs are part of the Boxerwood Education Association, a grassroots non-profit serving Rockbridge County, Virginia. Boxerwood advances its mission, “Boxerwood educates and inspires people of all ages to be environmentally responsible Earth stewards,” through four interrelated endeavors: The Woodland Garden, Youth & Community Programs, Stewardship Actions, and The Meadow. Its place-based work includes an award-winning multi-school partnership, a portfolio of clubs and camps, and a collection of seasonal happenings. Boxerwood’s stewardship actions involve hands-on efforts that protect waterways, restore soil, help wildlife, and promote a spirit of volunteering. Boxerwood also operates a homegrown community-based carbon-offset marketplace called COREworks and an on-site natural burial ground called The Meadow. Boxerwood Education Association has been part of community life for 25 years and purchased Boxerwood in 1999, opening it to the public shortly afterward. The organization was recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Environmental Education Center of Excellence in 2015. The history of the site includes the work of Dr. Robert E. Munger (1911–1988), a local physician who built his family home and planted the woodland garden in the 1950s, and the founding of Boxerwood Education Association by Karen Bailey, Hunter Mohring, and Mollie Messimer.
