Youth Earn and Learn Jobs-for-Kids was established in 2011 and has grown from an eight-week program into a year-round pre-apprenticeship. The program is described as a Food Desert Solution that incorporates food desert residents into the solution and has a goal to reduce the effects of food deserts, including food insecurity, unemployment, poverty, crime, chronic disease, and mortality. It provides real-world work experience and stipends and offers a platform to directly serve residents living in underserved, food desert communities.

Through Youth Earn and Learn Jobs-for-Kids and ALE-J4U, the organization has locally impacted food deserts, food insecurities, and food waste; provided mentoring, intergenerational Training & Development for youth and adults, and Career Coaching; and served seniors and communities. Youth Earn and Learn Jobs-for-Kids has been a part of a church’s health and wellness program by providing nutritional information and exposure to new fruits and vegetables. To better serve youth and their families, Karen Bailey founded the Community of Support Network, an informal gathering of people who quietly and seamlessly get things done.

The mission of Youth Earn and Learn Jobs-for-Kids is “To Keep Kids Off the Streets and Raise our Next Generation of Leaders, CEOs and Entrepreneurs!” Youth & Family Empowerment Services, connected to the program, is a nonprofit that empowers at-risk and underserved individuals, youth, and families by creating access to healthy foods, education, training, mentoring, job readiness, entrepreneurial skills, life skills, computer literacy skills, housing, and support in Hampton Roads and beyond.

Karen Bailey is the Founder and Executive Director of Youth Earn and Learn Jobs-for-Kids, the C.E.O. of The Resource King Intl., and the Executive Director of Youth & Family Empowerment Services. She has conducted business and career training sessions one-on-one and in group settings and has hosted think tanks, seminars, meetings, and training sessions. She has served as a Career Transition Specialist for Virginia Job Corps, where she provided career counseling, job placement, and mentored young adults.

Parents and community members have shared that Youth Earn and Learn Jobs-for-Kids has introduced youth to healthy eating and meal preparation and that the program “will surely develop a future chef,” according to La Francis R. Another parent, Gena F., stated that the fresh produce grab bags supported new healthy eating habits. Carmen T. shared that Youth Earn and Learn Jobs-for-Kids has been a big part of a church’s health and wellness program by providing valuable nutritional information and exposure to new fruits and vegetables.
