Headfirst Summer Camps has been operating for 30 years and has been the trusted choice for families across Washington, DC, Bethesda, and Northern Virginia. The Headfirst Companies began in the fall of 1996 when founder Brendan Sullivan returned to his native DC after the first of five professional baseball seasons in the San Diego Padres minor league system and started with a single baseball lesson. Brendan Sullivan is a graduate of St. Albans School. The stated mission is to inspire the personal best in high potential kids.
The Headfirst Companies operate Professional Camps in partnership with four Major League Baseball teams, one Major League Soccer team, and one National Football League team. Headfirst Summer Camps also operates camps in Bethesda, MD; Cathedral Heights, NW D.C.; Palisades, NW D.C.; and Oakton, VA.
Families have reported that counselors are “great” and “flexible to child’s needs,” and have noted the carpool line for before and after care, the ability to change camp topics after registering, and growth in skills in two weeks. Other parents have described the camp and counselors as “phenomenal,” mentioned that one child learned the backstroke in less than one week, and said the counselors are caring, kind, and very well organized. Parents have also highlighted that their kids “have loved it,” mentioned swimming every day, photo updates, and that their children have been grouped with friends, with one camper not wanting to go anywhere else. Another parent shared that a camper who previously did not like summer camp asked to return after a week at Headfirst, and appreciated the communication and photos.
Headfirst Summer Camps notes several features, including swimming every day, photo updates for parents, a carpool line for before and after care, and flexibility to change camp topics once registered. Programs are offered for ages 3–13 and are rooted in joyful, purposeful play, with a curriculum that blends imagination, hands-on exploration, and guided independence in an environment where campers feel seen, known, and celebrated. The organization states that it lives to elevate its camps as a platform to teach kids about life and open up possibilities for their future, and it offers Early Bird pricing for families who secure rates before January 14th.
