Blue Sky Fund is a youth development non-profit that focuses on outdoor education for Richmond area youth. Its programming centers on outdoor science education, resilience building, leadership development, and nature-based activities that advance racial equity in the outdoors. Over 2,000 youth participate in Blue Sky programming each year, spending more than 35,000 hours outside and visiting over 50 green spaces across its three core programs each year.
Blue Sky Fund began by providing scholarships for campers from 2003 to 2006 and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2007. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a team of outdoor enthusiasts, environmental educators, and nonprofit professionals. The organization’s mission is to provide transformational experiences for Richmond area youth through outdoor education and to advance equity in the outdoors by developing diverse groups of environmental stewards and leaders in the community. Its programming has evolved into three core programs that offer a continuum of nature-based activities for over 2,000 students each school year, and it adopted a 2026–2029 Strategic Plan in January 2026 with focus areas in Programming, Funding, Operations, and Governance.
Parents and students have shared feedback such as, “This is the best day ever! I don’t want to leave!” from a 3rd grader in the Fairfield Court Explorers program. A Richmond Public Schools teacher, Kat Shearer, said, “Blue Sky is awesome and their programs are so impactful! The activities are so much fun and provide an experience that I simply can't while inside the four walls of my classroom.” A 6th grade student, Kirsten, said, “Despite being an inside person, Blue Sky has helped me explore the adventurous side of myself & helped me think outside my comfort zone.”
