About

The School of Richmond Ballet Children’s Division includes Invitation to the Dance, Pre-Primary Ballet, and Primary Ballet classes where students dance in class to live music played by a ballet pianist. Students follow a signature ballet syllabus, study elements of story ballets such as costumes, scenic elements, and music, and learn about the story, music, costumes, and scenery of a ballet. Students also have opportunities to observe and meet company dancers, view the company in rehearsal, and see live performances at the theatre.

• Ages: 4–8 years old
• Schedule: Children’s Division Ages 4–7 runs from September 4, 2025 to May 30, 2026, with class options on weekdays and Saturdays in the late afternoon and morning.
• Price: A $45 annual registration fee is charged in addition to quarterly tuition; quarterly tuition is $211.50 for Invitation to the Dance 4, $234.00 for Invitation to the Dance 5, $241.00 for Pre-Primary Ballet, and $241.50 for Primary Ballet, with tuition including two tickets to specific Richmond Ballet performances and tuition and registration fees generally non-refundable under stated policies.

Students in the Children’s Division train with teachers who were formerly professional dancers. SRB students who are at least 7 years old and registered for SRB classes are eligible to audition for The Nutcracker. The School of Richmond Ballet describes the Children’s Division as “Learning the basics,” and dress code attire can be purchased at Ellman’s Dancewear in the Beverly Hills Shopping Center at 8524 Patterson Avenue.

Richmond Ballet states that it is a premier dance organization championing ballet and beyond and is dedicated to awakening, uplifting, and uniting human spirits through the power of dance. Richmond Ballet is referred to as The State Ballet of Virginia, Dance/USA calls Richmond Ballet “a jewel among U.S. dance companies,” and The Washington Post calls it “a company to which dance fans everywhere ought to pay attention.” Richmond Ballet notes that it makes the joy of dance accessible for all through its community offerings.

The School of Richmond Ballet Children’s Division is part of an organization led by Artistic Director Ma Cong and Executive Director Kathleen Holman, along with School of Richmond Ballet Director Tara Penick and SRB Artistic Associate Anne Sidney Hetherington. The broader leadership and staff team includes roles such as Rehearsal Director, Artistic Associate and Répétiteur, Production Director, Technical Director, Costume Shop Manager, Minds in Motion Director, Professional Training Program Director, Trainee Program Coordinator, Studio Company & Men’s Program Coordinator, Ensembles Coordinator, and various administrative, production, marketing, box office, and advancement staff.
