Eaton Arrowsmith Academy was founded in 2005, with its first location in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and the Arrowsmith Program has been in use for over 40 years. Eaton Arrowsmith Academy is managed by Eaton Arrowsmith Learning Centre Ltd (EALC), which also operates all online educational programs and assists in the management of the onsite nonprofit school in Vancouver, known as Eaton Arrowsmith Academy Association. Onsite Vancouver and Redmond locations are non-profit organizations. Over 1,500 students have successfully transitioned to mainstream curriculum, universities and careers, and more than 4,000 educational professionals across the globe subscribe to Eaton Arrowsmith as a resource for their work with families.
Eaton Arrowsmith identifies its core values as Fairness, Immediacy, Respect, Safety and Trust, and states that it works collaboratively to ensure the wellbeing and safety of students through Nonviolent Communication, mindfulness practices, and strong community relationships. The program states a belief that every student deserves an education free from discrimination, bullying, harassment, intimidation and violence, and has a non-discrimination policy covering race, colour, religion, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, or other legally protected status in admission and employment. Eaton Arrowsmith Vancouver staff members have received ERASE (Expect Respect & a Safe Education) training.
The stated mission of Eaton Arrowsmith Academy is to empower every student to reach their full potential by combining innovative cognitive enhancement methods with specially designed academic instruction, addressing the diverse learning needs of each individual. The programs are described as enhancing and strengthening cognitive abilities, improving achievement skills, and building academic independence, and as a first line of intervention for Learning Disabilities, ADHD, and high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder. Eaton Arrowsmith reports that it has empowered thousands of children, teens, and adults to shift from surviving to thriving in a safe and caring environment.
The organization acknowledges that it works, lives, and plays on traditional lands of Indigenous Peoples, thanks them for caring for these lands and waters since time out of mind, and states that it looks forward to working with them in partnership. One parent testimonial from Dr. Daniel Bankson and Dr. Anne Bankson describes the teachers as being in tune with each child’s cognitive, social and emotional needs, places Eaton Arrowsmith in the top echelon of schools based on their family’s experience across twelve schools, and notes that their child has blossomed in this environment and is ready to enter high school in a college preparatory program.
