About
Kids Camp is a week-long kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing camp where campers kayak and paddle board every day in more or less equal amounts. Activities include kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing when the weather cooperates, water safety, boating to new destinations on Lake Union, and games in Lake Union’s protected waterways. Campers experience new boating destinations and games each day in these protected waterways.
• Ages: 6–12 years old
• Schedule: Week-long sessions with camp starting at 8:45am, drop-off anytime after 8:25am, and optional after care available until as late as 5:15pm on each camp day; camp weeks offered on 6/8, 6/15, 6/22, 6/29, 7/6, 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3, 8/10, 8/17, and 8/24
• Price: $575 per kiddo for Kids Camp; after care costs $12/hr per child; any cancellation before May 31st will be refunded 90%; any cancellation after May 31st will be a 90% reusable credit with 10% kept to cover insurance; campers canceling for medical reasons with a doctor’s note or because of a family emergency will be refunded in full minus the 10%
Kids Camp follows an “inside-out” learning concept in which young campers discover for themselves how much they love to kayak, sail, or paddle board. The program uses a supportive, low key approach to skill development on the water, with limited structure to avoid creating “stricture” that eliminates fun, and it focuses on fun, play, safety, and incremental skill development rather than excessive competition and pressure. Youth participants are guaranteed a terrific staff, excellent equipment, good times, and great kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing instruction/adventure, and the program emphasizes building skills, confidence, and friendships on the water.
Counselors thoroughly understand boat-handling safety, are CPR trained, and know the lake, and the program maintains a 6:1 ratio of kids to counselor (or better). Kids wear life jackets at all times on docks and on the water, and Moss Bay will provide life jackets, though campers may bring their own. Moss Bay reports no serious injury or accident in 35 years of offering Kids Camp.
Campers should bring a warm layer for cool mornings, a swim suit, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, towel, and an extra change of clothes. Campers need to bring a sack lunch and snacks each day or cash on Thursday when there is an option to buy Ivars. On rainy or “iffy” days, a rain coat is important, and in Seattle a little drizzle will not stop activities, with use of pop-up covered areas and rain coats on rainy days. Waivers should be brought on the first day of camp, not sent in advance, and a new waiver is needed for each session attended.
