About

Woodland Soccer Club offers recreational youth soccer, including regular soccer games. The club follows Seattle Youth Soccer Association Rules & Regulations for Rules of Play for its games.

• Schedule: Game schedules typically come out in late August or early September, with most games beginning the weekend after Labor Day; U6–U9 games are on Saturdays, and U10 and above play on Saturdays or Sundays.

Seattle’s first organized soccer matches were played at Woodland Park in 1906, and Woodland Soccer Club’s crest has served as the club’s insignia since the club’s founding in the late 1970s. Woodland Soccer Club is approaching its 50th year as a club, and its crest combines an evergreen tree and a soccer ball. The club is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that is officially sanctioned to provide recreational youth soccer to children who live within its boundaries and is a member of the Seattle Youth Soccer Association and the Washington State Youth Soccer Association.

The Woodland Soccer Club mission states that it provides recreational soccer to more than 1,250 children within and around its boundaries in Seattle neighborhoods including Green Lake, Wallingford, Fremont, and Phinney Ridge. Recreational soccer at Woodland Soccer Club is open to any member of the public who qualifies under club guidelines, with no tryouts; if a player can register, that player can play. Players are assigned to teams by club registrars, coaches are not allowed to select their players, and parents are not allowed to influence team placement. The club’s stated goal is to distribute players so there are no dominant or deficient teams, with parity among teams and enjoyable, competitive games as the overriding priority. Woodland Soccer Club relies on effort and passion from participating families throughout the year to prepare and stage soccer games for over 1,000 youth every fall.

Woodland Soccer Club provides recreational youth soccer for families in Green Lake, Wallingford, Fremont, and Phinney Ridge, and its board of directors represents recreational soccer interests for these families. The club describes its recreational soccer opportunities as exceptionally low-cost and accessible. Spring recreational play is run through the Seattle Youth Soccer Association rather than Woodland Soccer Club.

The club lists a leadership team that includes PRESIDENT Michael Jordan, TREASURER Brian Cunningham, SECRETARY Steve Simpson, SCHEDULER (MOD) Diana Perrault, SPORTING BEHAVIOUR Will Hays, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR Ben Zulauf, MOD REFEREE DIRECTOR Christine Loftus, SYSA DISCIPLINARY Mitch Furyglas, EQUIPMENT CO-DIRECTOR Cheryl Tellier, SCHEDULING Mary Schoen (practices) and Diana Perrault (Mod-Age Games), FIELDS/MAINTENANCE Tony Soldato (Green Lake Goals), SYSA COMMISSIONER Michael Reneer, SPECIAL PROJECTS Doris Nguyen, TECHNOLOGY Steve Kuhn, and several open positions including VICE PRESIDENT, EQUIPMENT CO-DIRECTOR, VOLUNTEER DIRECTOR, EVENT COORDINATOR, and COMMUNITY OUTREACH.

Woodland Soccer Club notes that Seattle allows players who play on “select” teams to play in its recreational league, with each U10 and older team limited to three “select” players under Seattle Youth Soccer Association rules, and that players on “Premier” league teams are not eligible for recreational play. Woodland’s Fast Flying Tigers and Red Fire teams are listed as City Champions in the U12 Gold and U11 Silver Divisions, and the Flaming Fireballs achieved a State Recreational Cup victory.

All players are required to wear shinguards, and soccer cleats are recommended but not required. Woodland Soccer Club operates a Shoe Library at 5553 Wallingford Avenue N for cleats and shinguards, which asks for deposits to operate and encourages families to leave too-small cleats or shinguards for others. All players U8 and above need to order uniform shirts, and uniforms for U6 and U7 players are distributed at the field before the first game.

A parent letter from fall 2009 includes the statement, “There is no greater joy than spending sunny Saturdays at Wallingford Park with the community and with the children as they chase a ball across a field.”
