About

Vancouver Harmony Road Music School offers mobile piano-keyboard music classes for children in a group setting. Classes include activities such as sight singing, singing solfege (Do, Re, Mi), ear training, rhythm training and rhythm exercises, note reading, theory, keyboard geography, improvisation, and ensembles. The program also offers piano lessons for kids 4 to 8 years old and a 4-week introductory group music class with an emphasis on piano and keyboard.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Exploring Music is a 4-week introductory group music class, with each class lasting 30 to 45 minutes.

Harmony Road Music School brings a mobile piano-keyboard music classroom directly to children and can set up group music classes quickly, operating within the child’s schedule. Harmony Road teachers bring everything necessary for the class. Class size for the Exploring Music course is held to 10–15 children for personal attention and interaction with the teacher. Harmony Road music courses are group lessons taught in a creative, non-pressured atmosphere of cooperative learning, and the curriculum stems from the Yamaha program. The Harmony Road curriculum uses both eyes and ears while children actively experience music through singing and rhythm training, and it encourages the whole musician’s piano-keyboard capabilities while providing a foundation for the study of any musical instrument. Yamaha Education System principles used in the program require singing while playing the piano or guitar.

All classes are taught by Robert Bolton, a Harmony Road Music Instructor with over 35 years of experience. Robert Bolton has taught music and keyboard fundamentals to children ages three to eighteen for over twenty five years. His education includes study with the Yamaha International Education Division in Buena Park, CA, where he studied methods of teaching ear training, sight reading, rhythm development, ensemble playing, music appreciation, and performance for children beginning ages three to eleven, along with continual education in yearly seminars conducted by international, American, and Japanese master teachers. He studied music education, choral conducting, and performance in piano, trumpet, and voice at Portland State University, where he obtained a Bachelor Degree, and studied music theory, history, composition, and performance on trumpet and piano at the University of Oregon. His private instruction includes piano performance with Sister Ann Cecile Diagle at Marylhurst College and Gene Confer (jazz) in Portland, OR, and trumpet performance study with Richard Thornberg, James Smith, and Gordon Williams. Robert Bolton is a certified music teacher through Yamaha International Education Division and was recertified as a Harmony Road Music Instructor in 1999. His leadership roles include Music Director positions at Saint Rita Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Vancouver, WA, and First United Methodist Church in Vancouver, WA.

Harmony Road has taught music to children in Clark County for 24 years. The Vancouver Harmony Road Music School was established in 1988, and the site footer states it was founded in 2010. Since 1988, the school has offered a comprehensive music program to children in Vancouver, Camas, Battle Ground, and north Portland. The mission of Vancouver Harmony Road Music School is to use a highly motivated program of music activities that is designed to meet and develop the learning potential of children. Its curriculum stems from the Yamaha program that has been taught for 50 years all over the world and teaches children how to play piano in a natural, stress-free way. Parental involvement is required at younger ages and encouraged at all levels.

Parent and educator testimonials describe the program and teaching approach. One parent, Irma V., states, “The musical gift this school is giving my child will stay with him for the rest of his life. I also believe that my son’s academic success is tied to his musical knowledge. My son developed a true love for music which is what I want to see. I highly recommend Harmony Road Music School.” Dr. Linda Beale says, “His way of teaching music is ideal for children. He guides them carefully, step by step, at a pace appropriate to their ages and unique skills.” Dr. George C. Lorbeer notes that Mr. Bolton held the attention and interest of very young students the entire time and that students moved between keyboards and the center of the room for verbal and chalkboard work on music notes and scales, as well as hands-on experience with percussion instruments such as tambourines and triangles. Grandparent Carrie Winter says, “As a grandmother, I felt it was good for children to have a foundation in music and piano. I appreciated how he made music come alive. He made music fun and was good at encouraging each student.”
