Rolla Skate Club was created in 2018 when Lucy Croysdill and Carla Smith decided to create the club, and the Rolla Skate Crew includes Marcela, Stevie “Fleetwood Mac & Cheese,” Melissa “Coach BeerWagon,” Garner “G,” and Lillie. Rolla Skate Club acknowledges that it is on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations, and encourages learning about and supporting Indigenous-led organizations and advocating for Indigenous rights and sovereignty.
One participant, Jessie M., states, “I joined Rolla to try something new and stayed because of the community. It’s the best part of my week.” Members of the Rolla Skate Crew describe their favorite aspects of Rolla as the community, a welcoming and inclusive environment, making lifelong friends, taking skate trips to represent Vancouver, enjoying the variety of styles each coach brings to class, and a place where everyone is accepted and it is okay to fall, fail, and keep going. Another crew member notes that, for her, skating at Rolla is about sparking laughter and connection while rolling together, and others highlight the warm, welcoming vibe and the way everyone looks out for each other.
