About
Yakima Maker Space offers access to tools and shop spaces for activities such as 3D printing, ceramics and pottery, sewing and fiber arts, woodworking in a wood shop, and projects using a CNC router table and laser engravers. The program also includes computer workstations, Build-Your-Own Tool workshops, Maker Faires, and brainstorming sessions that involve kids and youth along with other participants. Members can use a vast array of tools, including sewing machines, laser cutters, table saws, and 3D printers, with some tools requiring safety training or orientation before independent use.
• Schedule: Members have 24/7 access; public open hours are on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Yakima Maker Space started in 2013 with the goal of creating a shop where participants could make almost anything and has since hosted dozens of events, including brainstorming sessions, Maker Faires, and Build-Your-Own Tool workshops. The mission of Yakima Maker Space states that there is greater value in making something than buying something, and that creating something also creates a personal narrative connected to that object. The program operates through memberships and classes and also receives support from business sponsors, and it recruits instructors from across the valley who are eager to share their passion. Yakima Maker Space describes itself as a community of artists, makers, hackers, entrepreneurs, educators, craft enthusiasts, creative thinkers, craftsmen, and “nerds of all kinds,” and states that it provides the space, tools, and community for participants to create, collaborate, and educate.
