First Tee – Central Washington began in June 2008 as First Tee of Yakima, operating at two golf courses in Yakima. During the summer of 2019, it expanded to include Kittitas and Chelan Counties and changed its name to First Tee – Central Washington to reflect the larger region it serves. The organization states that it integrates the game of golf with a life skills curriculum and describes itself as a youth development organization that uses golf-based personal growth programs. According to its mission statement, it focuses on building inner strength, self-confidence, resilience, and life and leadership skills that kids can carry into school, friendships, and future careers.
The program notes that community involvement can directly impact the kids it serves and the skills they develop in First Tee. It also reports that it is in the process of building a new practice facility at the SOZO Sports Complex in Yakima.
