About

Wisconsin Astronomy and Space Academy takes place at the Barlow Planetarium and includes hands-on activities where participants build a rocket and discover celestial objects. The program uses the planetarium’s Evans and Sutherland Digistar II video projection and automation technology and its Skylase FX full-dome laser projector, which is a 360 x 180 degree solid-state laser projection system.

The Barlow Planetarium, where the Wisconsin Astronomy and Space Academy is held, opened to the public on March 20, 1998 and has been serving Northeast Wisconsin for over two decades. It is the first major planetarium in the state of Wisconsin and is the second largest and second most attended planetarium in the state, serving approximately 35,000 visitors annually from Northeast Wisconsin. The planetarium’s mission statement is “Sharing the Wonders of the Universe!” The leadership team includes Planetarium Manager Teri Gee and Planetarium Supervisor Ty Westbrook. The Barlow offers school field trips, Scouting programs, birthdays, private events, and weekly public star and laser shows, and visitors come from across the state, the Upper Peninsula, and across the country. In August 2024, the Barlow was awarded an IMLS grant to purchase a portable planetarium using Digistar-Lite software, allowing the planetarium experience to be taken to those who cannot come to the Barlow.
