About
The STEM to Stern Program includes rowing, STEM instruction, swimming lessons, and rowing practice. Students receive STEM instruction at MSOE on Tuesdays and have swimming lessons at the YMCA before attending practice on Thursdays. A typical day for students in this program involves being picked up from school, taken to STEM instruction on Tuesday or to the YMCA for swimming on Thursday, then to rowing practice, and finally back home again.
• Ages: 11–18 years old
• Schedule: Students receive STEM instruction on Tuesdays and swimming lessons followed by rowing practice on Thursdays
This outreach effort began in the fall of 2016 as part of the Milwaukee Rowing Club, which has been continuously incorporated since 1914 as a non-profit Wisconsin membership corporation and was established in 1894. The Milwaukee Rowing Club works to remove barriers to participation in youth rowing, including swimming instruction, transportation, club fees, and training gear, and has tackled swimming instruction and transportation for this program. Through generous donations, the club offers need-based scholarships for its youth program that cover registration and regatta fees. Middle school and high school programs practice year round, with time on the water and indoors through the winter months. The STEM to Stern Coordinator is Dan Graham.
The Milwaukee Rowing Club is a member organization of the United States Rowing Association, the national governing body for Olympic rowing, and is qualified as a tax exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its mission is to provide the community with broad access to rowing as a recreational and competitive sport, to instill the ideals and values of rowing at an affordable cost, and to uphold an environment where athletes are expected to work together to achieve common goals. The club states that it does not discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, religion, color, gender, age, sexual orientation, or residence. Through its relationship with MSOE, the Milwaukee Rowing Club has access to vans that transport students from school to the program and home at the end of the day. The program offers rowing to students from throughout the Milwaukee area.
