About
Ozaukee County 4-H Youth Development Programs include 4-H clubs, camp, after-school programs, and special events such as the 4-H Pinewood Derby, Build Day, and Physics Day. Projects are offered in areas such as archery, shotgun, Legos, robotics, photography, the arts, and other topics that are meant to be hands-on. Projects are led by 4-H leaders who create learning partnerships with youth, and new members may join 4-H throughout the year.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Price: $5.00/car kit (one car per participant)
Ozaukee County 4-H is an informal, educational organization for youth in grades 3–13, and most clubs also offer a Cloverbud program for youth in 5K through grade 2. All youth in 5K through grade 13 are eligible to join 4-H, and about 80% of 4-H members live in cities, villages, or in rural non-farm homes. Projects cover topics including shooting sports, arts and communication, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), small and large animals, community involvement, outdoor education (natural sciences), plant and soil sciences, family, home, and health, cultural projects, or starting a project of their own. 4-H clubs, camp, and after-school programs give young people hands-on experience to develop an understanding of themselves and the world. Learn by Doing is described as a hands-on process that allows youth to understand not only how to do something but also why they are doing it.
The 4-H Pinewood Derby includes STEM programming and is open to youth in grades K5–13, with an adult division as well. The 4-H Pinewood Derby cost is per car kit, with one car per participant. Build Day offers hands-on support for members shaping, sanding, and assembling their cars, and Physics Day helps youth understand the “why” behind their designs and explore weight.
The 4-H program is the youth development program of the University of Wisconsin Extension and is guided by faculty and staff members from the University of Wisconsin Division of Extension. The Ozaukee County 4-H programs receive educational support and coordination through the UW-Madison Division of Extension Ozaukee County Office. Since 4-H started in the early 1900s, youth have learned by doing. 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization, with more than six million members and over 90,000 clubs, and it is the largest youth organization in Wisconsin with 150,000 youth members and 30,000 adult volunteers.
The leadership team for Ozaukee County 4-H Youth Development Programs includes Abi Quinlan, Ozaukee County 4-H Program Educator and 4-H Educator; Paul Roback, Community Development Educator; Manuel Peña, Regional Dairy Educator; Liz Gartman, Regional Crops Educator; and a vacant Area Extension Director position. The mission statement for Positive Youth Development is that it prepares the youth of today to become the effective, empathetic adults of tomorrow. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension states that it provides equal opportunities in employment and programming in compliance with state and federal law.
