About
Washington County Youth Hockey Association Programs offer hockey activities that include Try Hockey For Free, Intro to Hockey, Beginner Hockey, Instructional Hockey, and Travel/Competitive hockey. The program includes specific levels such as Mighty Mites (4U), Mini Mites (6U), Mites (8U), Squirts (10U), Peewees (12U), and Bantams (14U), with options for girls teams at Mites (8U), Squirts (10U), Peewees (12U), and Bantams (14U). Try Hockey For Free is led by certified USA Hockey coaches, and Intro to Hockey includes all gear and allows drop-in participation at any point within the session.
• Ages: 3–14 years old
• Schedule: The hockey season generally runs September through April, with Mighty Mites (4U) practicing once a month for 45 minutes, Mini Mites (6U) practicing twice a week for 45 minutes, Mites (8U) practicing twice per week for 60 minutes, and Squirt (10U) teams practicing twice per week.
The Washington County Youth Hockey Association’s mission is to encourage sportsmanship on and off the ice, promote teamwork, develop character and instill discipline through the sport of hockey. The Intro to Hockey program is open to Washington County residents ages 3–10 years and does not require previous skating or hockey skills, and all gear is included. All programs for skaters ages 8 and under are instructional with minimal to no travel, while programs for skaters ages 9 to 14 are travel teams that require Washington County residency, preseason tryouts for team placement, games almost every weekend from November through mid March, and the chance to earn a state championship for their level.
The Mighty Mites (4U) program is for 3- and 4-year-olds to get comfortable on the ice and in the gear, with drills presented as fun games, rink doors left open so kids can get on and off the ice during practice, and 20–25 practices in a season. Mini Mites (6U) includes 40–45 practices and focuses on hockey drills, working in similar skill groups, cross-ice hockey games, and developing skating skills, and near the end of the season the kids are split into teams for a fun jamboree. Mites (8U) includes 40–45 practices, focuses on learning hockey skills, working with teammates, and playing cross-ice or half-ice games, offers the first level with an all-girls team, places skaters on both an in-house mixed-skill team and a travel team by skill level (red, white, blue), and has travel teams that play 8–12 games against local associations and may attend one or two jamborees or tournaments.
Squirts (10U) is the first level of full-ice hockey and enforcement of USA Hockey rules and is described as the transition from little kid hockey to big kid hockey, with skaters at Squirt and above placed on teams based on performance at a preseason tryout, and teams at Squirt and above having the opportunity to play for a state tournament title. Washington County Youth Hockey Association hosts a Mite jamboree as an end-of-season celebration and invites teams from around the state, and near the end of the Mini Mites (6U) season the program hosts a fun jamboree as an end-of-season celebration. The leadership team includes Emily Bayer as Mighty Mite Lead and Mini Mite Lead, Chris Johnson as Mite Lead, and Reed Cartwright as Director of Hockey.
