About
Coombs Outdoors Youth Outdoor Programs offers activities such as skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, hiking, horse camping, soccer, and climbing. Programs run year-round for youth from Kindergarten through high school, and some former participants now work at Coombs Outdoors to pass on their experiences. Older youth can participate in the Empower internship Program in the outdoor industry workforce, and the Padres Program allows parents to learn to ski and participate with their children.
• Ages: Kindergarten–18 years old
Coombs Outdoors Youth Outdoor Programs grew out of the Doug Coombs Foundation, which was founded by Emily Coombs in 2012 and became Coombs Outdoors in 2017 after she stepped down. The organization serves over 400 kids in more than 10 programs throughout the year, with programs where Teton County youth grow up through the different offerings. In 2017, Hugo became a certified ski instructor at Snow King and is described as a parent and coach in the program. Beatriz is the newest Coombs board member and the first Coombs parent to join the board, and Emily Coombs founded the Doug Coombs Foundation in 2012. The mission of Coombs Outdoors is to break down cultural, financial, and knowledge barriers by providing year-round outdoor programming for youth from Kindergarten through high school.
Coombs Outdoors partners with Wheel Wranglers to co-create opportunities for youth to participate in the outdoor industry workforce through the Empower internship Program and to connect kids to mountain bike rides. Coombs Outdoors also invites kids into Jackson Hole youth soccer programs and has partnered with Exum Mountain Guides for climbing. Coombs programs take place on local public lands such as Grand Teton National Park and Bridger-Teton National Forest, and at local ski areas Snow King and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and the organization has a relationship with Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club.
Parents and participants describe their experiences in several ways. Graciela, parent of Grace and Xochi, said she heard from a cousin about how kids could learn to ski with Coombs and decided she had to get her girls into the program, and she described how her family learned to ski together and now talks about next winter. Beatriz, a parent and board member, said skiing on the weekend is the only time she sees her kids get out of bed early without complaining and that before joining they were mostly at home watching TV. Hugo, a parent and coach, said skiing was something his family had always seen others doing but never thought they would have the chance to do, and that when they found out they could participate there was no question they would join. Graduates and participants share short reflections such as “Try everything, it’s fun,” “Hiking may be hard, but it’s worth it,” “Skiing has taught me to never give up,” and “The Coombs Foundation is like my second family.” Katie McNamara of Wheel Wranglers stated that Wheel Wranglers is honored to support the Coombs Outdoors mission and to partner on the Empower internship Program and mountain bike rides.
