Operation Purple Camp is part of the National Military Family Association (NMFA), which founded Operation Purple Camp in 2004. At NMFA, the belief that Military Kids Serve Too® guides the program, and since 2004 NMFA has celebrated that service by providing free weeklong summer camp experiences across the country. NMFA enhances the traditional camp experience with a curriculum that focuses on intentional skill-building and connection to other kids with military life experiences, and campers and families are connected to additional resources such as support from mental health professionals, with a framework for ongoing support long after the camp experience has ended. Purple is described by the program as the color created by combining Marine Corps red, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, and Space Force blue, and a bit of Army green.
Since 1969, the National Military Family Association has been a dedicated advocate for military families and has championed the needs of military families and elevated their voices through advocacy, with 57 years of expertise supporting the military family experience and over two decades of insight into the power of camp. This program is powered in part by Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) to honor and empower post-9/11 injured service members, veterans, and their families, and is also described as powered in part by @wwp.
The National Military Family Association meets all 20 of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance standards for Charity Accountability and holds the Charity Navigator 4-star rating. The Association holds “A” and “A-” ratings from CharityWatch and ranks at the “Platinum” level on the GuideStar 2023 Platinum Seal of Transparency.
